The wonderful pupils at Whitestone Infant School in Nuneaton took part in a number of ‘booky challenges’ to raise funds for Freddie’s Wish and managed to raise a fantastic £1182.60!
Among the challenges, the children were tasked with taking photos of them reading books in an extreme place or way (all safe I hasten to add 🙂 ).
They also were visited by children’s author, Steve Smallman who made up stories with the children and drew wonderful illustrations as the stories developed. The illustrations are now hanging in pride of place in the school hall surrounded by the children’s stories.
The events, which took place during Book Week, culminated in the reception children inviting their grandparents in to school to read a book together and for coffee and homemade biscuits made by the school kitchen staff.
The headteacher, Nicola Green, explained that the charity is close to their hearts as several of their pupils have suffered a bereavement and they sought advice from Freddie’s Wish. They, therefore, wanted to give something to help others who find themselves in this situation.
I was honoured to be invited to attend a presentation of the sponsorship money and got to meet the lovely children and their teachers. It was a very special morning for me.
The children should all be very proud of their achievements.
