National Grief Awareness Week 2020 and Donut Day

National Grief Awareness Week (#NGAW20) is a national campaign that runs from 2nd-8th December every year and this year is more important than ever. The aim of the week is to break taboos and promote all the wonderful charities providing support across the country. The campaign is started by The Good Grief Trust who are a wonderful charity providing a national database for people to seek bereavement support in their area. We are very proud to be a part of this week and this year we are asking people to #shareyourstory, please take a look at their website and see how you can get involved and support this wonderful week. We will be particularly involved on the 7th December which this year has a focus on bereaved parents. nationalgriefawarenessweek.org

The 7th December, was the frightful day that Freddie was involved in the tragic accident that ended up taking his life. That morning we woke up as normal, had our porridge and were having a little dance along to music in the kitchen. Then Freddie with his rather sweet tooth spotted the mini donuts I had foolishly left in view, as I was feeling sad about him being with his Dad for the day, I thought why not. So Freddie and I had 2 mini donuts each. He ate one and just took a bite out the other before wanting to get out. I was in a rush to get him ready so the half eaten donut was then left on the highchair. He then left with his Dad and 15 minutes from our house the car had crashed, so heartbreakingly I came home 5 days later without him and the half eaten Donut was left on the highchair still.

So as a family we decided to do something positive on this painful anniversary and #DonutDay was started. We ask people to take a selfie of themselves eating a Donut and use #DonutDay and tag Freddie’s Wish on social media. We have found this to be a wonderful way to remember Freddie but also to break the taboo around bereavement, get people talking and show how you can do something positive even on the worst days. We really hope that you will help support us this year and help us to sugar coat grief!
